When the gauge is on "E", it means you need to put some gas in the van.

Please don't freak me out saying the T & C "just quit" on the road, and you have no idea what is wrong with the car. You might have told me the car was on fumes when you were coming home last night, and it may just need a splash of gas to get your butt home. It would have saved me an additional 10 mile trip from where the car coasted to a stop and home. Oh well, it's only the third time she's ran a car out of gas in the past few years. I can't wait for my 13 year old daughter to start driving. I might just strap a Jerry Can to the roof of the van. It might save me some headaches.

Sounds like somebody needs to be sat down and taught the basic functions of a car.

The gauge on my mountaineer almost always reads E. I keep track of my mileage. I know how far my car can go between fill ups.

It's only been a problem when my husband drives it. When I say the car is getting low on gas on a Friday night it does not mean wait until it runs dry on a Sunday and pray it's near a gas station.

As for teenagers and cars? They do very bad things to cars like not bother to check oil and coolant. Or bring their car back to you because the brakes are being weird. Yes. Wearing through your rotors will make them act weird.

Well, in her defense, the trip computer told her she had 5 miles till empty. It's a newer car in our family, so she is not familiar with where the gas gauge is when it is truly empty. Still, when the gauge hits "E", that may be the reason the car stops running. I wasn't so mad at her running out of gas, but that she tell me the car "just stopped", with the oil & engine light on. I thought she blew the engine, as it had been burning some oil previously (since fixed, I hope). Nope, she just ran out of gas.

My dad does this. He refuses to fill up until he is literally out of gas. He learned the hard way when he ran my old Jetta out of diesel.

Oof. You have to completely drain the tank on diesels right?

You should never run your car down 5 miles till empty. There all sorts of little particles that accumulate over the years in gas tanks. Having at least 1/8th of a tank prevents these floating particles from being sucked up into the fuel line, where they are very expensive to remove. I would advise your wife "30" means "0".

If there's air in the injection system you have to prime the whole fuel system or it won't start. So pretty much disconnect the injectors and run the pump until fuel comes out.
